Torque Converter

The lovely device you see depicted here is called a torque converter and is something of a miracle. Without it, we'd all be driving stick.
So when the torque converter in my car recently met it's doom*, I was naturally a bit concerned. How was I supposed to drive? Well, thanks to the mechanic down the road, things are all better (and he doesn't need to worry about his next boat payment).

*When the mechanic took the bottom off the transmission, there was a little flower of metal shavings that had worked it's way through. Too bad I didn't have my camera.
