I will send the original drawing for this to the first person to tell me what this specific image is based on. I'll only accept answers in the comments here, not on flickr and not via email. Bonus points for details and links.
Also: you can get this on stuff over on zazzle.
msnshn313 correctly answered the question. 1974 brought the world the first appearance of Hello Kitty on a vinyl coin purse.
Congratulations msnshn313. Email me via adamkoford.com with your address.

Nuts! I got nothing...
ReplyDeleteWould it be Norman Rockwell's "Hobo and Dog"? http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/image.asp?id=3311 Just a guess.
ReplyDeleteNo. Good guess though. I need a commemorative plate of that.
ReplyDeleteI found this: http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/2001859367033693065_rs.jpg
ReplyDeleteOr something simlr.....
Not that Jim. The answer will make everyone slap their palms to their faces simultaneously and painfully.
ReplyDeleteIs it this?

:-)
I just want it read into the public record that since I saw this on Twitter as it was posted I have done nothing but try to figure it out. I have to go to bed now. :(
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amycrehore.com/images/albums/NewAlbum_6c1d7/tn_The_Nibblerweb.jpg
ReplyDeleteCould it be this? Sorry for the small image size, the bigger picture is part of her slideshow.
I'm with kostia on this one. I think i'm going to have to admit defeat. I eagerly await what i'm sure is the painfully obvious answer.
ReplyDeleteCan't crack it yet. If it comes to me during my sleep, I may well have to pop out of bed to respond...
ReplyDeleteIt's not a Troy McClure reference is it? That's the only thing I can think of when I look at this...
ReplyDeleteBased on this?
ReplyDeleteKiki's Delivery Service?
ReplyDeleteLongshot, but is it this image? I know I've seen it with "o hai," but I can't find it.
ReplyDeletehttp://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/funny-pictures-cat-is-ashamed-of-little-kitten-in-blinds.jpg
For some reason I looked at it and could only think of the Little Rascals, I just haven't yet seen a picture to match.
ReplyDeleteReminded me of the book "Sans Famille" (Alone in the world) by Hector Malot : http://manybooks.net/covers/malothec1905419054-8.jpg
ReplyDeleteDarn! I was sure it was Rockwell's Hobo and Dog!
ReplyDeletegah. Lone Wold and Cub? best guess, if it's not charlie chaplin or norman rockwell.
ReplyDeleteI could swear it's an album cover from the 60s/70s, but I am having no luck proving that hypothesis.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'm thinking "Sullivan's Travels", with Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake (who would be hiding behind him and peeking out both from him and her bangs.)
ReplyDeleteSally Lou
Wait, I've got it! It's Dick Van Patten's Hobo Chili! Duh.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.boingboing.net/2007/04/23/hobo-chili-dog-food-.html
I'm sorta getting the ol' scribe-vibe from it. Maybe a nod to the cartoonist's historical roots?
ReplyDeleteIt sure does look obnoxiously familiar. Songs from the Wood?

Wow, those are some good and strange guesses, but so far no one has it.
ReplyDeleteThe Champ

The Lion King
ReplyDeletehttp://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/unbranded/l/unbranded-lion-king-leappad-interactive-book-leapfrog.jpg
Ok, this is an awesome one.
ReplyDeletePaper Moon
http://www.impawards.com/1973/posters/paper_moon.jpg
It's obviously a reference to the pro-hobo song Lucky Day, by Tom Waits
ReplyDeletehttp://www.lyricsspy.com/lyrics/tom_waits_lyrics/the_black_rider_lyrics/lucky_day_lyrics.php
There's a lot of things in this world
You're gonna have no use for
ANd when you get blue
And you've lost all your dreams
There's nothin' like a campfire
And a can of beans
And if I must tie in the "O HAI", then I suppose it's the lines:
Why, there's Miss Kelsey
She taught dance at our school
http://www.myspace.com/punchandtheapostles
ReplyDeleteit's even *more* obviously a reference to the new release 'I'm a Hobo / Can Of Beans' by Scottish Concrete/Thrash/Showtunes band Punch & The Apostles
Aparently, Adam had something to do with thew formation of the band:
"Formed from the rib of Adam, Punch & the Apostles walked through The Garden of Eden, were unconvinced, and moved to Scotland"
unrelated, I found this page of hobo terminology:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.angelfire.com/folk/famoustramp/terminology.html
Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Coogan in "The Kid"?
ReplyDeleteNone of those things are correct, but they have provided ample interesting clickings. It's more a visual reference than a hobo/thematic reference. I thought it would be figured out by now, so the original subject matter's sphere of influence is not so all-encompassing as I've assumed.
ReplyDeleteI may have to give clues eventually, but all of the clues I've come up with so far are far too obvious.
Masterpiece Theater?
ReplyDeleteAre we allowed to guess more than once?
ReplyDeleteSure. Guess all you like till we have a winner. You can even keep guessing after that, though I wouldn't recommend it.
ReplyDeleteI can't give up on this.
ReplyDeletetwo more guesses (for now):
Calvin and Hobbes (although for the life of me i can't think of a specific image this one is referencing)
or
Koala Yummies (worth a shot)
Alrighty, in that case:
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mona_lisa
Maybe? I know she doesn't have a can of beans, but...
Krazy Kat by George Herriman?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.lambiek.net/artists/h/herriman/herriman_krazykat1.jpg
Jeez.. It's on the tip of my tongue...
ReplyDeleteNext guess : Hans Christian Andersen's tale called "The travelling companion" (http://www.andersenstories.com/en/andersen_fairy-tales/the_travelingcompanion)
ReplyDeleteAlthough it could be Top Cat:
ReplyDeletehttp://amygrant.files.wordpress.com/2006/08/top-cat.jpg
Some version of Opie and Andy from The Andy Griffith Show.
ReplyDeletehttp://malocite.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/andy_show.jpg
I'll take a wild poke at it:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ww2planenoseart.com/Images/pages/Hobo%20Queen%20II_jpg.htm
If no one gets it, will you just pick the guess you enjoyed the most?
ReplyDeleteI'll take a shot, too: The Cat in the Hat!
ReplyDeletethe bow-tie: http://www.amazon.com/Cat-Hat-Dr-Seuss/dp/039480001X
the peeking: http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Seuss-Cat-Full-Screen/dp/B0001ATLZY

xox,

p.s.: linking to amazon only to avoid hot-linking someone's personal site...
Here's another long shot: Is it 1 to 2/3rds of a 'Triple Self-Portrait'?
ReplyDeleteWe've had so many guesses in this house since last night and I can't even remember now why we guessed these but might as well add them to the bunch!
ReplyDeleteWalt Disney
George Burns
Bob Ross (really don't remember why!)
The Thinker
Isn't that a mixed bunch!
Oh, I know, I know! Here it is: http://www.redbubble.com/people/jebus/art/1052062-3-mother-and-child
ReplyDeleteIf it's some sort of rebus, all I can think of is a "bean bag seat".
ReplyDeleteEither that or one of those classical paintings by Gainsborough or -?-. Wish I hadn't tossed my art history books now. There was one of a child peering from behind his/her mother's skirts...

ReplyDeleteYou could give us a hint by telling us what genre or what period the image comes from. It looks familiar to me, but I'm not getting it.
ReplyDeleteWell, Dirty Sock, Silver Spoon and Can O'Beans are all there, but Pink Conch is missing, so it can't be the cover of Tom Robbins's "Skinny Legs and All"...unless Pink Conch is symbolically represented by teh bindle...or Kitteh's bow tie.
ReplyDelete1974. Vinyl. And it's not music or literature related.
ReplyDeleteI may have said to much.
Hello Kitty
ReplyDeleteToo much, I mean. The misspelling was not a hint.
ReplyDeleteHooray! A winner! I'll update the post in a sec.
ReplyDeleteLooks at Hello Kitty watch on wrist, at time spent looking for answer, and kicks self...
ReplyDeleteCongrats, msnshn313...I would've never thought to go there.
ReplyDeleteAack, so Pip peeking out from behind Kitteh was just a red herring!?! Curses, foiled again by my lack of Hello Kitty knowledge.
ReplyDeletewouldn't you know I spent 15 minutes looking at Hello Kitty images trying to find one similar? (No, I guess you wouldn't. But I did!)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad we finally have an answer! It was driving me nuts!
ReplyDeleteI was doing an image search for 1974 and vinyl and saw the Hello Kitty! image, but I didn't make the connection. I was sure it was an album cover.
Congratulations, msnshn313! Hello Kitty didn't occur to me, glad you got it!
ReplyDeleteOn the upside--I now know what every album released in 1974 looks like.
Once I walked into a bar with that Hello Kitty purse in my pants. The bartender asked about it, and I said, "Arrrr! It's driving me nuts!"
ReplyDelete(I "worked" at the Sanrio Suprise store when I was 19)
Well, congratulations to the winner.
ReplyDeletePip and Hello Kitty look like a match made in Heaven. Like Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher...
