I don't know who told you that Mona Lisa means "pretty little monkey girl" in Spanish. In Spanish (Castilian) mona is a female monkey, yes. Lisa, well, in Spanish that's just a name. A derivate of Elisabet (Elizabeth) which comes from the Hebrew "Elisheva" roughly meaning "my God is an abundance".
My guess is that Mona has some other meaning in Italian. If I had to guess, probably the equivalent of Lady. You need to check with an Italian speaker on that one.
Oh! Lisa also means flat in Spanish. So I guess if you were to directly translate "Mona Lisa" it would read "Flat Female Monkey". Perhaps inspiration for another drawing.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the clarification! A flat monkey girl would be interesting. Though they're on postcards so they are already flat...
