No, I haven't been working on my Spanish--though I really should.
There are currently about 8 monkeys underway as well as a couple more Maximum-Fun-Pledge-Drive-Winner-named-hoboes. All told there are about 15 or so monkeys left on the list, so if you've ordered one it shouldn't be too long before you see it here and in your mailbox.

Thor Pencils
Originally uploaded by Ape Lad.
If you're a fan of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's epic run on the Mighty Thor, you've heard (and maybe even share) the complaints about the inking style of Vince Colletta. Well, now is your chance to put your ink where your mouth is and have some fun re-embellishing a select page of Kirby's dynamic artistry!
Thanks to the assistance of John Morrow, publisher of The Jack Kirby Collector, I've posted a photostat of Jack Kirby's pencils from a page of Thor issue 144 for you to ink, experiment, and play with.
If you are an artist, or want to simply try your hand at this often overlooked facet of comic book artistry, click here to join and read more about the project.
And no, I haven't forgotten about your wonderfully custom named monkey postcards. In fact, several of them are staring at me from my drawing board right now. Their eyes! Why won't they stop staring!?!

Monkeys in progress
Originally uploaded by Ape Lad.
Several monkeys are in progress, and I hope to get them in the mail before the holiday, though I make no promises.
Also, the eagle eyed may spot a hobo or two on the drawing board. Five lucky winners who made a pledge in the recent Sound of Young America pledge drive won hobo post cards. So far two have named a hobo, and both are clothing related with a McSomething last name. Great minds think alike!

Old Doc Yak
Originally uploaded by Ape Lad.
From barnaclepress.com, a treasure trove of old comics. They have tons and tons of Old Doc Yak strips, chronicling his hare-brained cosmetic adjustments to fellow animals who are his patients, his attempts to get these patients to pay, how he came upon a million dollar bill, and his many failed attempts to cash it. From 1912-13. Funny, readable, and it even has a monkey.
Click on it to read it.
Also, Barnacle Press has a store on CafePress with a t-shirt featuring the last panel of this strip. I have one and wear it far too often.

First of all, thanks to "Holy Mac" for suggesting Mona Lisa Monkey and Hellmonkey to boingboing. I really appreciate it and hope to repay you somehow even though I have no idea who you are. If you don't read boingboing.net, you should. It is as wonderful a directory as their byline claims.
Also, apologies are in order:
First, to Rick Meyerowitz, whose work I am very familiar with, though I had never seen his Mona Gorilla. I didn't even know he painted. I'd only seen his cartoonery. His version is awesome. I was too young to be reading National Lampoon in those days. So young in fact that I wasn't even born yet.
I also apologize to anyone who speaks Spanish, which obviously does not include me.
And finally, thanks to those of you who have taken the opportunity to type a monkey name into that box over there. There are some funny ones on the horizon, and I am grateful and excited we can collaborate in this apparently underpriced manner.

For those who have ordered a monkey (via the sidebar at right), several will be ambling in (ambling? Is that right? What is the way a chimp walks called?) over the next couple of days.
For those who haven't ordered a monkey yet, don't worry, they aren't going anywhere anytime too soon.

bored game
Originally uploaded by Ape Lad.
Last week when Mark F. interviewed me for the podcast, he asked if I had saved any drawings from the various desk jobs I've had. Come to find out I've actually lost a sketchbook that was pretty important to me (rats!), but I did stumble across this in my stacks of stuff. This is probably 10 years old, probably from when I was working as a temp for a collection agency and had a list of clients I was supposed to call to hound about their past due heavy equipment leases. Don't get me wrong, I totally fulfilled my obligation and did the job I was supposed to do, but once the phone calls were done for the week, there was lots of down time. Plus I had my own huge office for some reason and lots of privacy. This is the result of boredom + privacy.
I quickly colored it tonight. Feel free to print and play and share. It's completely ridiculous.

Here's the third part, this time posted on google video because it is a couple minutes too long for youtube. Sigh. I've spent a great deal of the afternoon figuring that out and realizing I don't have anything to edit it with.
Anyway, forgive my chattiness and enjoy this installment for what it's worth. I'll post a scan of the final in a bit.
Here's part 2, featuring my hairy arm!
I'll post the rest tonight along with about a dozen monkeys, including this one.
Those who have listened to the podcast from a couple days ago are probably over the shock of actually hearing my voice. Do I really sound like that?
Anyway, here's part one of a three part video showing how I monkey around.
I'll post more tomorrow, including a scan of the end result.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Mark Frauenfelder of boingboing.net today, and our conversation can be heard here, on the Get Illuminated! podcast. We covered a large range of topics, including Hodgman, Colletta, monkeys, Pumaman*, and more.
We didn't discuss the origin of my online moniker, but I've explained that elsewhere. If anyone remembers how the name "Ape Lad" was bestowed upon me, post it in the comments. If no one remembers or can find it, I will tell you about it some other time. Suffice it to say, the name chose me and not the other way around.
*one correction: Donald Pleasance stars in Pumaman, not Rod Steiger. I apologize to their respective estates.

Mnemonic MonKey Pirate
Originally uploaded by Ape Lad.
Hey kids! Can you decode the number/letter combination depicted in this illustration?
Beginning at the top, with the goose egg on the right, then proceeding clockwise we see a roman numeral. Next up is a function key. Then there's salt (I wonder what the atomic weight of sodium is?) followed by another goose egg.
The monkey's holding up a couple of fingers, and his tail is making a funny shape too! What's that on the flag? Down from there we see a tungsten bulb (again, what's the atomic weight of tungsten?).
Continuing clockwise, we see an airplane. Not just any airplane, it's a Domodedovo jet! Awesome! I wonder what their IATA code is? From there, we proceed to the marks on the monkey's peg leg. Oh look! A bee! Maybe he's going to get a d8--I mean date from that tree!
Up from the tree we see a billboard for the lovely state of Montana, our 40th state. Or was it?
The monkey is holding a pair of dice and has just tossed an envelope. Not just any envelope, it's a size c5 to hold that crazy mathematical equation.
I hope he's careful with that rock! It looks like barium!
Next to the rock we see an ad for piano lessons. How many keys does a piano have?
We're almost done as we come to the moon that looks like a letter, and finally another goose egg.
See kids, with this simple mnemonic image, you'll never forget even the most complex numbers.
If you do, google has it posted almost 2 million times. Just type in the magic words "AACS key" and they will provide the solution.
Would you like a handy copy of this for you or your monKey pirate friends? Click here, and thanks for playing!
Also kids--please note: this is not one of the custom monkey postcards. Those will start showing up tomorrow and are still available via my blog at apelad.blogspot.com.
